Statement

Can we ever really comprehend someone else’s full humanity? I am captivated by the gamut and complexity of human experience, and the nuances and contradictions that are a part of life. The works in Woman surreptitiously probe what it means to be a human in one kind of body or another.

Although my work can be described as figurative, I am not interested in portraiture. Because our stories are so vastly different, in the end, what connects us to each other is something impalpable and mysterious; it cannot be measured, quantified, categorized or harnessed.

Moods, expressions, feelings -- this is the realm I explore in my work. I approach the eyes of my subjects as elusive ‘cartographies of experience.’ When I am successful, the real and imagined collide in my stylized depictions of faces and figures, and identities are rendered as fluid, layered, superimposed and/or distorted. They raise more questions than provide answers. Just when you think you might understand, that can change; your surrounding environment and your own shifting experiences inevitably become a part of the narrative.
