John Bernhard

A Retrospective

John Bernhard is a Swiss American artist, photographer and writer who traveled North America extensively before settling in Houston, Texas in 1980. For more than three decades he has chosen the medium of photography to explore the everyday world from new perspectives, breaking away into different pathways of artistic expression. He continues to devote all of his energy taking photographs and bringing them together to enhance their meaning with visual interplay.

Beginning in 1985 with a solo exhibition at the Houston Center for Photography, Bernhard has had more than 30 solo shows, three museum exhibitions, and many collective exhibitions throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe.

Bernhard's photographs are also included in 20 museum’s permanent collection, such as the Denver Museum of Art, Minneapolis Institute of the Arts, Musée de la Photographie, Belgium, Musée de L’Elysée, Switzerland, Museet for Fotokunst, Denmark, New Mexico Museum of Arts, Pushkin Museum of Art, Russia, Southeast Museum of Photography, Florida, and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Alfonso Bonilla

Spectral Narratives

Alfonso Bonilla is a Colombian multimedia designer with extensive experience teaching in China and Singapore. Alfonso is also a photographer who has spent many years doing research and experimentation around graphic photography and its possibilities as a pictorial language of expression.

He uses the tools of graphic design in combination with a particular image exposure that through overlays and a subjective configuration of each piece seeks to communicate its message, through a reconfiguration of reality of great chromatic richness.

Alfonso Bonilla's work resonates with contemporary audiences who are hungry for images that move them in a world that is replete with media and images. His work is an unmistakable sign of the times in which we live.

The event provides guests with an opportunity to meet the artist in person and view recent work in a vibrant setting, in the heart of the Washington Arts District/Sawyer Yards art complex. Rolando Rojas: New Works will be on view September 6 through September 18, 2017.

OPENING RECEPTION

Place: Silver Street Studios. 2000 Edwards Street, Studio 208, Houston, TX 77007

This event is free and open to the public.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born in Oaxaca, Rolando Rojas is inspired by the legends, stories, and myths of the Zapotec culture that have permeated his life in Mexico. In his colorful paintings, Rojas portrays this mythical world and interweaves it with deeply personal narratives formed out of the artist’s own experiences, present and past, many of which are drawn from his childhood growing up in Tehuantepec. Recurring motifs, such as the cosmos, the sun and the moon, and a series of mysterious creatures (both real and imaginary) inspired by his grandmother’s storytelling, are hallmarks of his paintings and prints, as are universal themes of fertility, sensuality and music.

The Ten Ants Exhibit Opens February 11

The Ten Ants Exhibit

10 Ants is the title of an exciting and meaningful artist exhibition conceived by Valentina Atkinson of Serrano Gallery at Silver Street Studios. The opening reception will be held at Silver Street Studios on Thursday, February 11, 6-9 pm and will run through February 15.

Each of the ten artists selected are tenants of Silver Street Spring Street the Silos and Winter Street Studios,. In addition, the reference of “ants” is very appropriate as these artists have a shared focus to further the strength and viability of the arts in Houston, while incorporating their international artistic influence from Mexico to France, Brazil to Australia.

The 10 Ants paint a broad stroke relative to their involvement with the arts. Several serve on artist advisory committees to organize events and to help expand the careers of fellow artists, curate major public art exhibitions, volunteer to teach in school art programs, produce an art magazine and generously lend their time and energy to organize complicated exhibitions.

These are not artists who go to their studios each day and solely work on their personal projects.  These are artists who keep their studio doors open, invite conversation and help to support an entire community.  This is the definition of art with a “soul.”  Community is about holding your arms open and assisting in the efforts of others. It is about setting aside your own interests and offering generous listening to what is occurring for others. It is about knowing that what we do as artists is always better when we hold a space for others.

The art will be displayed on ten large wooden crates as used for international shipping. They are raw and fabulous and will showcase the art in an extremely unique manner. The exhibit will include painting, digital art, plastics, sculpture, mosaic, jewelry and fabric.

To obtain further information, please contact Sara Jackson, sara@kenektid or 281- 455 7033.

What appears simple is in fact complex and multi-layered." (Anna Tahinci)
